George W Bush vows to maintain strong US engagement in Asia as he begins a key regional tour.

President Bush says the United States must resist the temptations of isolationism and protectionism and remain fully engaged with the Asia Pacific region. President Bush said more must be done to remove trade barriers, stimulate economic growth and alleviate poverty. Dominic Hughes reports.

Fighting terrorism, addressing North Korea's nuclear ambitions as well as liberalizing trade are all high on the agenda. And at Singapore's National University, he told his audience the United States remain committed to tackling the problems facing the region.

Amid these challenges, we hear voices calling for us to retreat from the world and close our doors to its opportunities. These are the old temptations of isolationism and protectionism, and America must reject them.

The fears over North Korea's nuclear programme will be discussed with leaders also attending the economic summit of Pacific nations that is the focus of this trip.

Japan's lower house passes a controversial bill encouraging teachers to instil patriotism in their students.
South Korea says it will back a UN resolution criticising the North's human rights record, in a big reversal of policy.
